How To Choose a Payroll Service

By , About.com Guide

Knowing when and what to outsource is one of the keys to being a successful restaurateur. More and more restaurants are having outside companies take care of their payroll to save time, money and increase efficiency. Hiring a reputable payroll company will make tax time easier, keep you looking professional and save time for your bookkeeper.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 2 hours

Here's How:

  1. Assemble a list of 3-5 payroll companies. To find these companies, search the web and ask other small business owners as well as your accountant. Choose a large company like Paychex and a couple of smaller companies.
  2. Compare prices and services of the companies' basic plans. Make a simple chart to compare what is included in each plan and how much they cost.
  3. Call customer service of at least two of the companies. Ask them how quickly they can re-run payroll checks if there are errors. Ask them how long their fees are guaranteed for and how long the average customer uses them.
  4. Ask for references and check a couple to make sure the company provides fast, accurate service. Make sure their clients are happy.
  5. Enroll in one of the services. Even if you're not open for business yet, call in a sample payroll for yourself and any partners. Pay yourselves a minimum amount and see how the first cycle goes.

Tips:

  1. Ask plenty of questions. If you forget something, call back and ask.
