Here's How:
- Assemble a list of 3-5 payroll companies. To find these companies, search the web and ask other small business owners as well as your accountant. Choose a large company like Paychex and a couple of smaller companies.
- Compare prices and services of the companies' basic plans. Make a simple chart to compare what is included in each plan and how much they cost.
- Call customer service of at least two of the companies. Ask them how quickly they can re-run payroll checks if there are errors. Ask them how long their fees are guaranteed for and how long the average customer uses them.
- Ask for references and check a couple to make sure the company provides fast, accurate service. Make sure their clients are happy.
- Enroll in one of the services. Even if you're not open for business yet, call in a sample payroll for yourself and any partners. Pay yourselves a minimum amount and see how the first cycle goes.
